Becoming a Better Athlete

Becoming a better athlete does not have to be complicated. Athletic activities such as ball sports, kayaking, skiing and running/hiking all require a level of baseline health. Consider this your “health tank”. There are a few simple steps you can take to improve the capacity of your health tank. This in turn can improve performance, endurance, reduce pain and assist in injury recovery.

Follow the steps to improve your baseline health function:

  1. Getting 150 minutes of moderate physical activity (like brisk walking) per week  or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week (jogging) as tolerated.

  2.  Strength training two or more  days per week.

  3.  Sleeping eight hours or more per night.

  4.  Drinking a minimum of 1/2 ounce of water per body weight lbs daily.

  5.  Finding ways to reduce overall stress levels. This can include exercise, breathing techniques, meditation, or seeking help from psychology.

  6.  Improve your diet with the 80/20 rule. Try to eat whole foods and healthy foods 80% of the time, while leaving 20% for flexible dieting.
